Amos+Andy came first. + 'Why did they leave Shaphire off the list?

Shaphire was on the show too. Why isn't that character listed and given credit.
This show was here on TV "long before" Diane Carroll's how. They talk about her paving & breaking the way for Blacks in the early days.
Amos & Andy was here and it was a great show to watch.
I hope the kids get to see some of the old comedy of yesteryears.

you are absolutely right, but i think they meant their own show, or wasn't married, i loved Sapphire, and Mama.

reply

They are both listed....Ernestine Wade as Sapphire and Amanda Randolph as Mama...aka Ruby Begonia..her real name in the show...as in "Do da name Ruby Begonia ring a familiar note?"

reply

no, her name on the show was Ramona Smith.

I think the "prevailing wisdom" at that time was that Amos 'n Andy was exploitative, and Julia represented the start of a new era where blacks could play the lead roles in TV in a non-exploitive way. Unfortunately, the producers, playing it safe, couldn't figure out how to do that in a sitcom without sacrificing humor (which, as you may be aware, is a rather essential element in comedy). I remember sitting at home with my mother, dutifully watching Julia and trying our best to enjoy it, but after 2 or 3 weeks we just had to throw our hands up.

I agree. One day these actors should be given their due.

Actually, "Beulah" was the first sitcom to star a black woman (either Ethel Waters or Louise Beavers on TV; Hattie McDaniel on radio), but because the character was the maid to a white family, it was considered to be in the "A&A" mold, I s'poze.
"We're fighting for this woman's honor, which is more than she ever did."
