I've seen that building interior before

I watched this movie today and I'm convinced that the interior of the apartment where Andrews accidentally kills the man is the same set as the infamous interior of the Bates House from Psycho. The doorway and staircase are identical, and only the back staircase under the main stairs (to the cellar) was missing. I realize that this movie was made by 20th Century Fox and Psycho was from Universal, but the resemblance is uncanny, and I doubt just a coincidence. Has anyone else noticed this? Can it be absolutely proved or disproved?

it's definitely the same set - that was my first thought the instant i saw that scene. i've seen that interior in several movies from that era, but i don't know how you could find this out for certain.

No way was that the same set. It was a much smaller area at the entrance and the staircase was just a typical apartment teniment size. You may have seen it in various noir movies, but the Psycho entrance and staircase was not even close to this film.

It couldn't have been the same set -- but I saw the similarity to the basement door immediately.

The style of architecture was used a lot around the turn of the century in many Victorian houses. So this could have been copied as sets for various studios without using the same set. Like a ranch house in the 50's, sets were built and reused and demolished. Not uncommon for several studios to have similar sets.

Or you could compare it to the house in Bates Motel currently showing on A&E....
