Geoffrey Rush?

Was anyone else struck by how much Geoffrey Rush lifted his character in Pirates of the Caribbean from the Long John Silver character in this movie? Shiver me timbers!

reply

It is fairly similar. However, in fairness to Geoffrey Rush his portrayal isn't much different to countless other pirate characters.

reply

Geoffrey has a great pirate swagger.

Yeah, not to mention they stole the title for the POTC sequel from Treasure Island. Not enough people give credit to Stevenson, of course people don't read books these days either.

reply

Um, the term "Dead man's chest" was an maritime euphemism
for "coffin". Stevenson didn't invent it.

reply

That, my dear fellow, is because virtually every pirate that you see is a rip off of Robert Newton.

He is the pirate equivalent to Patient Zero.

I have a distinct memory of one scene in a movie, but I don't know what movie:

As I recall, there is a pirate chasing a young boy up a mast of a ship (or up a narrow staircase maybe?). The camera shot was from the bottom looking up at the boy's face as he looked back frightened. The pirate or the boy wore a knit cap with black and white stripes going around.

I was a kid, and this scene really scared me and stayed with me. I'd like to find the movie.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Edited to add:

Not in Treasure Island.

It's been a few years since I've seen the film, and some of the details you mention don't necessarily register for me, but there is a scene like that in the 1950 Disney version of "Treasure Island." There are alternating POV shots of the boy trying to elude the pirate at the top of the ship's mast. Young Jim Hawkins ends up shooting the blaggard in the face and he tumbles from the ratlines to the sea. This was an understated bit of violence for a Disney flick in the fifties, but boy, it sure stuck with me both in childhood and when I saw it again with my son at a library auditorium in Colorado. Very effective.

The scene I remember from when I was a kid was not in this movie. I rented a VHS from the library. I would assume it was uncut. The scene you describe is not the one I remember. I'm going to revise my original post.

Thank you!

The pirate at the top of the mast was Israel Hands - a really nasty piece of work.

Israel Hands was killed at the top of the mast and was a pretty violent scene for a 50s disney he threw a knife and got jim in the shoulder before getting shot in the face and bouncing off the side of the boat into the ocean. Not to mention other shootings and stabbings in the movie.

Thanks for your reply (after all this time!)
100% correct!!

If this is indeed the movie I am thinking of, can anyone tell me if the man/pirate following the boy (who would be Hawkins if it is from this movie) throws a knife at the boy's shoulder, pinning him to the mast? And after that, the hoy shoots the pirate dead on?

I found that scene quite dramatic, and it is one of those scenes that has stuck with me for my entire life (I saw it when I was 5 or 6, and I am now almost 23.... so my life is far from "entire").

I would very much like to know if this is the same movie in which this scene is in.

reply

It is this movie. Israel Hands throws the knife at Jim, then Jim shoots him.

Jim then escapes back to the fort, which, in the interim, was taken over by Silver. They fly the white flag and the Doc comes over and patches up Jim's arm.

If a pirate ever puts the letter "R" in almost every word, he is inspired by Newton's version of Silver. Newton is where all of that originated.

I think that Kevin MacNally or Geoffrey Rush would make a great Long John if they ever remake this AGAIN, with somebody like Devon Werkheiser as Jim. Anyone?
