Robert Newton deserved an Oscar for his role

Newton is the definitive Long John Silver, the definitive Pirate. It don't get better than this, by cracky!

reply

Oh nonsense!

Newton's hammy overacting is highly enjoyable (It's amazing how many times he can actually work "Aaargh" into words), but Oscars are for GREAT acting, not hambone scenery chewing that passes muster only because it's in a children's movie, and is campy good fun. By no stretch of the imagination did he deserve an Oscar for this performance. He was, himself, VASTLY better in other movies, although he was always something of a hambone.

It DOES get better than this.

I thought it was a really good performance. I know some people think that over the top= bad, but I don't. Johnny Depp is just as over the top (ok, almost as over the top) and everyone praises his performance. I thought Newton was great. I mean come on, defining what a pirate is for people who haven't even heard of the movie has to be worth something!

Newton be the best says You, agreed says I!

His accent and his little twitches and wide crazy eyes are brilliant :)

If you like him in Trasure Ilsadn you should also like him in Blackbeard the Pirate.

reply

I suppose you are not going to get an Oscar for pure ham!

Its that man again!!

reply

I agree, he owned that role and many less deserving performances have Oscars on their mantles.

Do you understand the words that I am saying to you?

reply

Agreed; he's always been my favorite. :)

reply
