What is funny is that the studio was trying to hint that he & Jean Simmons were having an off-screen affair. Maybe Gene Simmons would have been more like it.

I watched the movie on TCM tonight and Robert Osborne made it very clear that Jean Simmons had been romantically involved with Stewart Granger for almost two years prior to So Long At the Fair. In fact, they married later in the same year the film was released.
Mr. Bogarde was not only a respected actor but a war hero who had been involved in liberating the horrific Bergen-Belsen Death Camp. He was just as courageous in his career choices. Although he wasn't open about his personal life, to my knowledge Rank Studios didn't create a romantic fantasy between Mr. Bogarde and Ms. Simmons.
