Better than White Heat?
Does anyone else favor this over the more talked about White Heat? I just like it because it is more compact and less over the top.I'd love some opinions.

No way! This is a good movie with a good cast, especially with Jimmy's advice about using a revolver instead of an automatic (I'm a professional Gunman), but White Heat is a GREAT movie, with a GREAT cast, and since no one but me has responded, I'll just say "Top of the world, Ma."
shareThe two films are certainly different in tone. In a way White Heat is comparatively "simple-minded", but maybe it's more successful on its "gut level" whereas Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye doesn't excite the viewer quite as much. But I'm glad the Cagney brothers (who produced this film) decided not to simply repeat the White Heat formula, but instead chose a different approach. This movie was based on a somewhat "class conscious" novel by Horace McCoy, otherwise best known for They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
White Heat is of course filled with memorable, classic movie moments, and contains probably Cagney's most spectacular performance. Still, the cops are good (even if you may dislike the Edmond O'Brien character) and the crooks are evil (even if you sympathize with Cagney's mother love). Very black and white. In Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye, you have corrupt cops, corrupt lawyers and powerful, sinister politicians. The characters are more apt to surprise you. Cagney manages to repeat several mannerisms from the previous film and still come off as a completely different personality. Here his character can even be polite and witty.
To conclude, I'll be wishy-washy and say I almost agree with Noirkiss 3: White Heat is slightly overrated. Its fans (including me!) are willing to overlook its faults for its several great moments. Whereas Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye is very underrated. Maybe it simply hasn't been seen by enough people. Both films, with their different "agendas", are very worthwhile entertainment, and both are very interesting variations on Cagney's earlier gangster portrayals.
I love "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye". I like it as much as "White Heat". "White Heat" is more beloved for it's over the top performance by Cagney. WH has one of cinemas most memorable endings. Cagney is more conventional in KTG. Also, I think KTG dilutes it's noir purity with the courtroom brackets.
shareKTG also has weak female performances. White Heat had the powerhouse performances of Virginia Mayo and Margaret Wycherly.
shareThis is my opinion:
KTG is a good flick, but White Heat is one of the best flicks ever made, and one of Cagney's most inspired performances.
No, this isn't as good. Cagney is great of course and Bond and MacLane are fun as the corrupt cops, but the female characters really weigh this movie down. I was baffled at both of them doing the things they did, whereas Mayo's character in White Heat made total sense.
shareno, this is a very good movie but White Heat is better When there's no more room in hell, The dead will walk the earth...
The answer is no, Cagney is great of course as the gangster & Ward Bond & Barton Maclane as the crooked cops & Luther Adler as the shady lawyer their all great with James Cagney. Even Barbara Payton was just as good as Virginia Mayo in "White Heat" but the other female interest Helena Carter the rich daughter who drove around in a right-hand drive roadster was weak & annoying. She's just not that interesting & she's not a good actress & her scenes just didn't measure up to Cagney's electrifying screen presence. She was unnecessary & irrelevant & didn't add anything significant to the movie. But all the other elements were excellent.
shareBoth great but I like this one better. I prefer this cast, not a big fan of Edmond O'brien. Although I liked him as the mad old southerner.
