Wow. That's Strange...

This is a very odd film. It starts off with a journalist investigating the (possibly mysterious) loss of a yacht with a wedding party aboard, which had occurred the year before. This portion is shot mostly first person, from the perspective of the journalist, a technique not often used (One of the Mike Hammer films I recall?). Anyway, it gets a bit stranger as he picks up bits of information by sheer luck and also picks up a young Eurasian woman who is a mute artist who has drawn a series of images of the events aboard the doomed yacht.

The movie then becomes a sort of framing sequence as he presents his evidence to a couple of newspaper editors and goes into an extended flashback depicting the events. Adultery, jealousy, secret agents and people confronting imminent death, all leading up to quite a conclusion.

I was reminded, partly by the presence of Peter van Eyck, of the strange '60s Dr. Mabuse films but I think this movie is making some attempt at seriousness. It may not be altogether successful, but I won't be forgetting it soon.
