(spoiler) Her baby?

Is the baby ever mentioned after her mother refuses to take care of it?

I may have missed it, I decided to take up smoking during this picture. Absolutely nerve wracking...

No mention of the baby afterwards. We are to assume that he was given up for adoption which is why she ran outside and tried to climb the prison wall.
I kinda hoped that once she got out of jail she went after her mother and the stepfather and beat them up.

I do think there's a small mention of the baby late in the movie indicating that she had to surrender it to the state because she had no one to care for him. One can interpret the found & adopted kitten as a surrogate baby. And, when threatened with her 'baby' being taken away again, she tries to flee.

The baby is mentioned at her first parole hearing. They ask her why her aunt and uncle couldn't wouldn't take her baby but would take her. The Superintendant then says she's Ben through a lot, married, watched her husband killed, had a baby that was taken away by the state.

The aunt and uncle were probably past their prime and didn't want to start over with a baby. They would have taken Marie and the baby but at the time, Marie was still going to be in prison. By the time she came up for parole, the baby had been given up for adoption.

Marie knew she'd lose her baby if her mother, or some other relative, didn't step in. That's why she freaked out when her mother told her she couldn't/wouldn't take the baby then ran out.

What I couldn't understand is why Marie would want her child to live with the stepfather and/or mother. That did not sound like the best environment for him especially since they didn't want him.
