Getting a kitten to play dead
Not that anyone is going to be able to totally answer this here, but how does one get a kitten to look limp & dead like they did in the movie? Think they might have drugged it a little?

shareIt might have been just a soft toy - at least I hope it was.

It's HOLLYWOOD!
shareYeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they drugged it :(. It was probably common in those days.
I sure hope it was treated humanely; that scene was the most heartbreaking scene of ANY movie I've every watched. I cried and cried after seeing the poor little kitty being held by Eleanor.
shareAnesthetic drugs are quite humane and used daily by Veterinarians. It did look a bit like a stuffed toy, though. Even knowing this, it's a truly heartbreaking scene. Funny, I always falsely remember that the Matron killed the kitten, breaking it's neck herself - made her end even more satisfying, maybe.
Who cares...
shareIf you watch the scene closely, you can see the kitten twitch a little, so it probably was under sedation.
shareI just saw the movie yesterday, the scene broke my heart as well. I sensed something bad, when the inmates rebelled and destroyed the beds. I think they drugged the cat too, or as someone said used a toy.
shareI had a vague memory of the matron killing the cat, too. Even thought I remembered it being hung. I was worried about that kitty the whole darn scene. Poor little thing. I, too, real life kitty was sedated.
shareThat honestly looked like a stuffed toy she was holding---it wasn't the real cat, thank goodness.
