Key Largo ...
Comparisons here with Bogarts 'To Have and Have Not' because it was based on the same Hemingway story .... but the ending of both this movie and Key Largo are so similar, I'm surprised theres no mention of KL in any of these threads.
Considering both Bogie and Garfield were leading men with 'tough guy' screen personas, I'm also surprised that Garfield was down with a role that ends decidedly different than Bogies role/heroism did under basically the identical circumstances and Bogies performance having been only a little over a year prior to Garfields in this movie.
Bogie 1, Garfield 0.
Yes, it would be very childish of Garfield to care about such a comparison but audience perceptions of an actor can have a huge effect on both an actors and a films bottom line. I dunno if either actor cared about such things but many 'stars' have carefully managed those personas (or someone did their best to manage it for them - 'image' and all that). Just a thought ...
