Great Newport Beach Locations

I haven't seen this film in decades and Turner Classic Movies apparently doesn't screen it, but I remember some of the uniquely Newport Beach locations.
Harry Morgan (John Garfield) and his two daughters live in a small house on Balboa Island facing Newport Harbor and a wide shot of Harry walking to the house was shot on the bayfront sidewalk. The shots of Harry taking the boat to sea were shot in Newport Harbor and when he goes to a bar it's not just some generic studio set, but the exterior of the legendary Christian's Hut on Newport Bay. This film is terrific Noir and it deserves to be seen again.

Awesome indeed!

And I contacted Warners and they wouldn’t say one way or the other if it was coming out on DVD. I hope it does!

reply

It is on DVD now. I just ordered it from my library and will be very happy to see it again!

reply

YES!

Lucky you have such a cool library!

WhopeeDeeDahTrool, you're right, I'm a WWII baby, born in 1945, just a few years before this film was shot. I also know the difference between the use of the word "your" and "you're." I was not cruising the streets of Balboa Island in the time of this film's setting, but I did in the 1960s when the island and many of its houses and landmarks hadn't changed from the 1940s. I just ordered the film on DVD and I look forward to watching it once again.

Agreed, this was an excellent film. And I enjoyed the non-stereotypical treatment of the black man, Wesley. That final scene with the character's son was poignant. A class production all around.

"A class production all round" is a good description. I've watched it again and again on tv over the years (decades) and forget every time just how good the kids are in it, especially the girls, but also eight-year-old Juan Hernandez, Juano's son. Much prefer John Garfield and overall to To Have and To Have Not with its Bogie-Bacall star treatment.

TCM is showing it THIS MINUTE

Great film ! Love those Newport Beach filming locations. One of the most overlooked areas . All built up today. "Lord Love a Duck" has the carousel and a few other places on the peninsula.

Thnx Celtfire, for your inside info on location shots. A lot of fun!
