Looking at Golden Globe awards I see she was actually nominated for TWO golden globes for her role. Winning in the new category of Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.
Were there others with such nomination or did this one only occur because they had just created the new category?
I had to look it up and you're right! I get that it's a drama and comedy but c'mon, that's just stupid.

This was back before the studios controlled the nominations - putting a performance in the "musical comedy" category when it's a dramatic turn with a song or two. The membership of the Golden Globes decided how to vote for a performance, and amazingly, enough of them thought enough of Judy's dramatic moments in the role to vote her in the dramatic category alongside Swanson and Davis, presumably others more accurately voted her best comedy performance and the same people were not voting for her in both categories still it says a lot about the multi-textured performance Judy Holliday gives, I was prepared to see a sensational comedic turn but was unaware of her stunning dramatic moments prior to seeing the movie.
