This is a beautiful little remark - made by Dixon to the befuddled old lady seeking her lost dog. John Strachey was the Minister for Food at the time - and rationing in UK was actually more severe after the war than it had been during it. So, to call a meat stealing dog 'Strachey' was a lovely piece of British anti-political establishment satire. Nice one, George.

You are right, but do you know why rationing was so bad after the war? The USA,Britain and France were occupying defeated Germany and the German grain supplies were mostly in Soviet controlled East Germany. The Soviets were happy to cause trouble for the Western Powers by not supplying food from the traditional sources. So Britain had to ration bread in order that German people did not die of starvation. The British government had to make a newsreel film to explain this to the unhappy British public. Of course the British Housewives league,a Tory front organisation, was not interested in facts like this.
But why should have Soviets supply West Germany with anything? They conquered East Germany as you said, and USA, Britain and France occupied Western part. They didn't supply Eastern Germany with anything either. And they weren't providing starving Germans with food, they were making investments into their new territory. And it paid out very well. Especially for USA who got the entire Nazi SS army experts and engineers working for them and making them leading army force soon after.
ib011 - yes, I was aware of the context to post-war rationing in Britain. Notwithstanding the need to prevent Germany from starving, I don't think we can blame contemporary Britons for being rather peeved that they were suffering worse hardships than during the war on account of geo-politics.

Thanks for that. I looked it up and only found Strachey the writer who was involved with the painter Dora Carrington. I couldn't make the connection, though.

that he supplied information to Richard Crossman knowing that Crossman was going to pass it on to the Irgun terrorists in Palestine.
