I really liked this film, loved the look of post WWII London, the buses, the coppers, Dirk Bogarde- I even had a lump in my throat for Dixon, after all they took the trouble for viewers to know and like him.... but I wanted to throttle that shrieking cow Diana....grrrr!

shareI agree about the real value of this film being how it preserves a particular period in history. The shots of trolly buses and bomb damage and White City and so on are wonderful. I would like to be able to say the cinematography and design are good across the board, but oh dear, it really is patchy. The sped up parts are really ridiculous.
Peggy Evans is truly awful in this. But she is no orphan. The acting is uniformly awful, even from the great Dirk Bogarde.
As for the story, it really is weak.
But yeah, worth a watch for the history value.
Absolutely - her unhinged, overwrought performance was the worst part of the film. Terrible acting by this broad (who btw looked a lot like Veronica Lake's ugly sister).
