Jack Warden?

Does anybody know what role is played by Jack Warden? I just saw the movie last night for the first time, and I saw Strother Martin as one of the men in the lineup early in the movie. Jack Warden is credited as 'Bit role', but I don't remember who he could have been.

Maybe he was the truck driver? Or one of the cops that busted in on the viewing? Or one of the cops sitting in the shadows during the police lineup?

I don't know. Never realized he was in it, but will start looking for him next time I watch it.

reply

I'm assuming he was in the line-up scene (with Strother Martin) sitting in the dark. The truck driver was credited to Fred Graham. The only other scene I can think of that he could be in would be in the police commissioner's office as a reporter. Oh well, if anyone is about ready to watch it again, keep your eyes peeled.

Thanks!

reply

I think he may have been in the room during the commissioner's press conference.

reply

Quite possibly - the Train Engineer who helps Dix & Doll to the Doctor's house.

reply

If his face is on screen at all it would be in the Commissioner's press conference scene. after the commish flips the third radio switch the camera goes to a shot of several people in the room. The top of the face of a guy in the top left of the frame (looking over the left shoulder of someone) MAY be him. He's covered up by the camera man taking a flash picture for a few seconds too. As far as I can see this is the only possibility, and it's a stretch at that.

I too did not see Jack Warden ANYWHERE in this film. However, I'm wondering if the inclusion of Jack Warden's name here on the IMDb list for "The Asphalt Jungle" (1950 film) might have been a mistake. Jack Warden actually appeared in a short-lived TV crime drama called "The Asphalt Jungle," which ran for only one season in 1961. Here's a clip of it on YouTube, and yes, Jack Warden does appear in it (starting at the 4:20 mark):

I was skeptical about this credit, but on reflection it probably is accurate. But if so, then I agree that he must be in one of the crowd scenes -- for example, in the commissioner's office (the press conference, or possibly among those waiting to see him about sighting Doc). Alternatively, he might be in the line-up audience at the beginning. Clearly, if he's here, he's not exactly front-and-center.

He is definitely not, as one posted suggested, the railroad worker who takes Dix and Doll to the doctor, as this actor (David Clarke) is credited, and anyway he looked nothing like Jack Warden.

The only thing, I guess, is to watch it closely again and see what we can find, including using some suggestions from other posters here.

After initially reading the OP of this thread, I replayed (with a little Fast Forward thrown in) the entire film twice and looked thoroughly to see if I could spot Jack Warden. Alas, to no avail! I know he is definitely not the helpful railroad worker who takes Dix and Doll to the doctor. But I looked at other scenes, especially the group or crowd scenes, and I just couldn't see Jack's face anywhere.

Unless somebody can come up with an original copy of the official cast list which clearly includes Jack Warden's name, I'm leaning more towards my assertion that it's a cast listing error on IMDb, a mixup with the later TV series in which Jack did play a role. I'm sure you've encountered a few of these cast errors on IMDb yourself, Hobnob. I myself have encountered at least a few of them before: right off the top of my head I recall one for "Adventureland" (2009) which I assisted in getting corrected. Another for "Harry and Tonto" (1974) which still needs fixing. And one for Ozu's "The End of Summer" (1961) which also needs fixing. There have been others, too, but I can't recall which ones.

Oh, you may well be right, Eric, I'm just intrigued by the idea that he might be lurking in some dark corner someplace. When I get a chance I want to look too.

I've seen some similar mistakes on IMDb, but more commonly I've seen omissions of actors rather than crediting someone who's not there. Trying to establish the veracity of these has proven very difficult -- just saying, "I know it's him" doesn't work so well!

Jeff York also has a small uncredited role as a policeman. I saw this movie today but didn't read this thread until after so I didn't spot Jack Warden. I'll have to watch it again to see if I can spot either or both.

haha.. I do stuff like that sometimes too. I did wonder when Jack Warden appeared, so thanks for the efforts!

I guess since everyone noticed Strother Martin, they must have also noticed Frank Cady, a.k.a. Mr. Drucker from "Green Acres," as the scared witness at the lineup. His voice is unmistakable.

I like spotting bit players who had larger and/or TV roles later. In "Shane" for example, Edgar Buchanan (later "Uncle Joe" on Petticoat Junction) was obvious, but the "squatters" also featured Miss Jane Hathaway and Grandma Walton.

Could be. Of course, this was released way before the general public had the option of zooming in to see who's in the background and who isn't.

If he is in the film it could be a scene that's not shown. The role is listed here as uncredited which means it also could have ended up on the cutting room floor.

This is a mistake. Jack Warden is not in this film. Jack Weston is!

reply

I've probably seen this movie ten times over the years (that may provide some indication that I'm not exactly young. No,I didn't see it when it was first released!). I don't recall seeing Jack Warden or Jack Weston.
