The "dude" is Louis Calhern, a fine actor that gave very good performances in many films.
The Jean Hagen performance as Doll, Sterling Hayden's brunette girlfriend holds up better than Marilyn Monroe's role as you've stated.

shareTo me, this is one role in which Marilyn was the great eye-candy many consider her to be. So yeah, I prefer her over the other dame. On another note, since there's quite a few good career-best performances to be found here, I can't say who the standout is.

I saw this film on the big screen last Friday at Noir City in San Francisco. Wow.
Calhern's acting and and Louie's story stuck with me this time.
All of them were perfectly cast, IMHO.
