DVD Release? Please, Please, Please

This is one of my favorite films from the 40s, especially from from Max Ophuls (why is there only 1 DVD of his available in the US). A complex portrait of post-war social dynamics, especially through its representation of women and minorities, this movie has to gain a wider public audience (the frequent screenings on the Canadian Family Channel don't count). What I wouldn't give for a nice remastering of this superbly-crafted film....let's get Ophuls' other films on DVD too.

I agree, though I have not seen it, I wish to...

I agree this should be on DVD now!!

Gosh how I wish to have access to this film. <sigh> Bootleg dvd copies can be purchased online but I don't want to shell out $20 for a poor transfer. Ophuls' American quasi-noirs(TRM and Caught) are so awesome. I guess I'll just have to watch "The Deep End" until TRM becomes available.

It's being shown on the UK's Channel 4 on 3rd July......

WHen will it be released in the USA?

Upgrade to multi-region: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/why-go-region-free.htm

Being 'region-locked' you are limited by what you can watch and are certainly forced to accept quality standards of the DVD copyright owner/production company of a specific film in the region that you live (unless, of course, it is Public Domain). This is essentially disregarding your potential enjoyment as a cinema fan. With Multi-Region players readily available in both PAL and NTSC standard countries, our options continue to expand. With the ability to order online from every corner of the world, it almost seems prejudicial not to take advantage of the global village that you live in.

It's good to see some appreciation here for The Reckless Moment. This is definitely my favourite Max Ophüls film and one of my favourite 1940s film noirs, with outstanding performances from both James Mason and Joan Bennett. It's full of exciting suspense, a wonderfully old-fashioned atmosphere, an intelligent plot and, as the original poster aptly stated, a complex portrait of postwar social dynamics that feels just right. I'm so glad it's finally getting the long-overdue DVD release it deserves and I hope it will now be discovered and appreciated by a larger audience.

I would love to see this film, as well as any film directed by Max Ophuls.

I have a fair copy of it. I taped it from commercial television years ago, and have sinced transferred it to disc. It's one of my top five movies, and I guard my copy with my life.

3 Ophuls are about to be released on Criterion - the US imprint. The same 3 got release first in the UK then, a few months later, Caught and Reckless Moment also got a release so perhaps it might be the same over there?

This is being shown here on BBCTV on Saturday night, May 30th 2009

Hi,

It's 4 years later and this wonderful film noir is still not out on DVD (two thirds of all old movies are not available on DVD nor are they shown on TCM or any other TV channel).
My advice: get a copy of the movie at www.ioffer.com. I got a gorgeous, flawless DVD copy a few months ago from ioffer and I'm so happy I finally have it. It even comes with bonus material.

It's 22 minutes long and by Todd Haynes, called "Maternal Overdrive".
Check this out:

It's included on the British DVD of "Reckless Moment" which you can order at amazon.co.uk and only watch if you have a multi-regional DVD player (which we have).

Saw this movie on TCM On Demand. Absolutely brilliant! I'm disappointed there isn't a DVD out!

Here's hoping for a Criterion release.
