Good movie on most counts, just a pity the script didn't support better Donnelly's radical character transformation. An extra scene or two might have helped.

Very true, it does become a sudden change in character development with nothing happening to justify it.
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.
I always interpreted it that Donnelly falls in love with her and can see/feel under how much pressure she is. And that might cause his change of heart? He's impressed by her and respects her, something he probably never has encountered with a woman before.
