You should really read the novel. Charles did operate him and he lost the foot because of a gangrene. Hippolyte got an wooden foot.
Charles was a good man, but he was dull, very simple, naive and easy to manipulate; and a mediocre doctor. He was married when he met Emma and felt for her. His wife died from shock when she learned that her lawyer took alll her fortune.
