Saw this movie Saturday night on TCM. Didn't like the way it started but really got into it. I think it might be one of the best Bogart movies of all time. The closing speech in the courtroom brought guilt to almost everyone there.
They should probably show this movie in high school and middle schools. Might have an effect on some young person.

definitly one of the best bogie movies...with a great supporting cast....I woke up tonight at around 4am with my tv on TCM and to my suprise KNock on any Door was just about to start....I was psyched cuz my original copy got ruined so I pressed record on my VCR and finally got this movie back in my collection...they have to put this out on DVD soon...one of the only great bogart films not on DVD yet...

The ending of this movie makes me sick. Bogie tries to convince the jury that we are responsible for criminals' actions. How many criminals today try to blame their faults on the life they lived. Pretty Boy had everry oppurtunity to make things right but he was a hot head, and blew every chance he had in life.
So Bogie makes a big speech in the end so we feel sorry for him. I would contest that this is one of his worst, in acting and in overall movie quality.

I think that saddest plight of humanity is realizing how interconnected we truly are. Our words and actions can destroy or uplift. Think about it.
I havent seen this in a long ,long time. In fact I dont think Ive even seen it to the end. Im giving it a shot tonight because "To Have & Have Not" follows it on TCM.

ok- I just saw the whole thing- this flick was kinda lame for Bogie- I give it a 6.5- - He was good- Derek played a predictable punk

I don't think the movie was ever trying to excuse what he did. With all the stuff that happens with Nick's wife, it becomes very hard to be sympathetic toward him. It's pretty obvious to me that it was saying while there are horrible criminals out there, we need to be more aware of how they came to be that way. And I think its true that many people become victims of their circumstances. Do you think it's a coincidence that poorer neighborhoods are subject to more crime? To really get rid of the scum, you need to treat what's causing it.
This was an amazing movie not just for it's message, but also it's acting and directing.

just watched on TCM ... having never seen it before i stayed to the bitter end waiting and waiting ... i was very disappointed ... not at all one of Bogie's best by any standard, indeed i can't think of any i'd rank below it
shareI think that the ending speech of this movie is of a defense lawyer who knows that his case is lost and is using every tool at his disposal to keep his client from getting the chair. His passion, I think, stems from his feeling not only of being responsible (feels he should have done more to help) and of a kinship.

shareBogey's truly compelling alright, but Derek's barely adequate and the whole picture the film paints of deliquency, is rather melodramatic and romanticized - despite making some astute observations. And, yeah, it all gets rather preachy in the end. Must have packed a considerably greater punch in 1949 than it does now.
