Remake Redux

I remember reading about three years ago that a remake of this movie was being made; Robin Williams playing multiple roles and Will Smith playing the son of the disowned mother. Anyone else hear about that?

reply

I heard that too, as you say about 4 years ago, or at least I heard they were making a remake, with Robin Williams in it. I was so horrified I went straight out and bought the video. So far I've heard no more of it. I hope they've binned it, they would absolutely ruin it.

Don't have a video any more, so I will buy have to get the DVD soon I guess. I have just bought another Ealing Studios box-set and am settling down to enjoy it (Scott of the Antarctic, Went the Day Well, Dead of Night and Nicholas Nickleby)

Honestly, I don't think having Smith and Williams do a remake would be bad. It'd just take the right people to help them bring this to life. Personally, i haven't seen the original. However, as I said, I could still see it.

It would be a very dark comedy, of course. Stanley Kubrick meets Tim Burton.

last I heard it was the english comedian Sascha Baron Cohen(Ali G) who was set to do the re-make.

reply

Robin Williams? Only the imagination is terrifying.

reply

C'mon. Think about it. I could see RW playing multiple characters. He was believable as Mrs. Doubtfire.

reply

Hmm...You know? Robin Williams would not be an awful choice, but certainly

there would be better. His natural ecstasy is FAR too much for the eight

D'Ascoynes. Sacha Cohen would be a better choice. If only Peter Sellars were

alive! And...perhaps...Michael Caine would do well in the roles?

As for the part of Louis going to Will Smith, I shout to

you: "Noooooooooooooooooooooo!" Honestly, there is nothing remotely conniving

about him, and that was key to that character.

Jude Law, perhaps? I think he would be a generally good choice.

reply

I think we need to give Jude a break. He's too "pretty boy" for the role. And I do think having a twist such as a bi-racial son getting revenge for his mother being ousted from the family would work.
Robin Williams would still be the perfect choice for the D'Ascoynes.

*beep* it i'll write it.

reply

Can't imagine Robin Williams playing Henry D'Ascoyne jr.
I am terrified about this re-make, if it gets made, then the chances are that it will distroy the origanal. Ladykillers was absolutly stripped of it's charm, and now whenever I ask anyone if they've seen the origanal, they say that the remake has put them off for good! NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

reply

Eddie Murphy should whiten up and play the Guiness part. About time he was given a decent role. Will Smith isn't cool enough for the Dennis Price role. Using a racial angle on the movie would work (it was implicit in the original) but would be funnier if Murphy delivered the racist gags and the writers could get away with more with him in any case. It might be funny if they went for a Jewish Dennis Price rather than black but as I say use Eddie Murphy. Ali G can't act.

if they do remake it , it should DEFINITELY still take place in the UK
americanised remakes are the worst

reply

I was in favour of the Ladykillers remake when I heard about it; the Coens could have improved on the original, and I stand by that in spite of the fact that in the event they didn't. But this is a different matter. The 1955 Ladykillers is a decent black comedy, KHaC is an all-time classic. It shouldn't be touched. By all means play with its themes the way they did in _Splitting Heirs_, but don't remake it.

I didn't know that! I hope they don't because the Tom Hanks version of the Ladykillers was awful!

reply

Even though Kind Hearts etc is probably my favourite film of all time, I still wouldn't be against a remake. I don't like that premise of playing the race card, though; that's a bit obvious. A nicer modern twist would be better. If Robin Williams wasn't suitable to do the role, Im not sure who would. Chances are we'd end up with Jim Carrey and end up with a load of stupid noises and fart gags.

reply

Honestly, this movie doesn't NEED a remake! It's perfect as is. And they'd probably get some idiot like Tim Burton to direct. Just... no.
