If they wanted Guiness for the lead role, he would have been cast. Split screen would not have been needed, they just would have used over-the-shoulder shots almost exclusively.
Filmmakers used to have good old techniques like those, long before the now-cliche line 'we'll just fix it in post' became the safety net for directors everywhere.
