Edith question SPOILERS
Was watching this and wondered if Edith only reconsidered Louis proposal when he was so close to the dukedom? Was she secretly a bit of a social climber?
shareEdith is naive enough to think that Louis possesses her own brand of natural integrity and deep sense of duty. She is completely sincere about following (and imposing) her own upright moral codes - to the extent of being rather priggish. Thus she is taken in by Louis' impersonation of a man of sterling character and vulnerable to his manipulative ploys. Edith would not be drawn by the temptations of titles or greater wealth.
