Confusing Title

Why is this movie so named? Is it not about the good old summertime. Weird. But I liked the movie, especially since 'Cuddles' was in it.

ITA. I watched it last night on cable, had no idea what it was about, and then I realized this was extremely similar to You've Got Mail. It would have been nicer if the title had some relevance. It all seemed to have taken place in the good old wintertime too. Just a bizarre title.

It really makes no sense even with the actual song in the movie. And it's the only one of the three (the others being 'Shop Around...' and 'You've Got Mail') whose title has no real relevance to the story.

Similarly, when I first saw the movie on TCM, I knew I had to have the dvd. When I got the dvd, I noticed that the cover art was also not related to the storyline. At all.

I know it's a few months but I wanted to add my opinion. I thought the title referred to them meeting in the summer.

Agreed! The movie began in the summertime; Van Johnson's and Judy Garland's characters met in the summertime; and the story comes full circle and ends with their characters with their daughter in a future summertime.

Also, the 1890s song, "In The Good Old Summertime," was used to set the stage/time period for the story.

I had no problems with the movie's title.

I have no problem with the tile either (many movies have titles that don't
reflect the plot, for heaven's sake). BTW, the original title was "The
Girl From Chicago." I think that's a crummy title. Glad they changed it.

I think ljspin hit the 'mail' on the head. Van Johnson narrates this movie from a future vantage point. (Recall the very first shot is a modern day Chicago.) In The Good Old Summertime is a song from the Gay 90s where the story is set. Certainly for audiences of the time (who knew the song first) it set an expectation plus had familiarity which is always good for marketing purposes. Finally, as ljspin said, the movie did begin and end in the days of summer. Love the title, love the movie.
