Yeah, these type of movies will never be made again, not that I don't enjoy movies made currently, but the times are different and the stars were bigger then life, (especially Robert Mitchum who is very cool).

It's interesting to watch these lesser-known films from the Golden Age. You get the impression that Hollywood always provided a certain high level of entertainment. I always think I could have picked a movie theater at random back then and had a good time no matter what.

...Justin Glory be, Delbert, you should eat! You're a count, for God's sake!

Nice thought, but it sure ain't the case. There was a whole lot of junk then as now.

reply

NO kidding.. we only see the good stuff from back then, 90% of the releases were shot in two weeks, one take only (heck, even It Happened One Night fits this description) - some actors would make 5-6 movies per year.. they cranked them out, only a small percentage were the 'classics' we see today

My only regret in life is that I'm not someone else - Woody Allen

But this was a great film - very entertaining. Mitchum and Greer are great together, as well as the rest of the cast. The locations are totally authentic - it's just really well done.

reply

You are correct kid...there has always been a proportionate amount of junk in every decade and every medium.

reply

One of the more enjoyable aspects of this film is that many of the exterior shots were filmed on location at various Mexican locales which helps immerse the viewer in a believable world. What is truly sad is that the drug policy of the United States Government has destroyed much if not most of this once romantic vacation destination for the more adventurous American tourist not to mention the incredible amount of violence and economic hardship that has been inflicted on the Mexican people.

Help me out here...is this Bush's or Obama's fault. I have to know which direction to vent my outrage.

reply

Obviously it's Trump's fault, because he's responsible for every bad thing that ever happened in history, even before he was born.

reply

It is not the drug policy of the USA but this country's huge demand for drugs that ruined Mexico. No market, no seller!

reply

I thought about that too. The only danger Mitchum and Greer faced from Mexicans was from those two guys at the gas station. And I think all they wanted was for Mitchum to buy them a beer.

I read on another board that Americans with missing relatives can send DNA samples to Mexican authorities, for help in identifying all the bodies they're finding.

Very definitely sad.

All you needed to know about this film to know that it would be great entertainment was that Don Siegel directed it.

reply

It was very good and served its purpose. Good escapist entertainment, but it wasn't earth-shattering. There were far better films made in 1949. That said, I could stare at Mitchum and Grier all day, they are so cool and beautiful.
