Art Direction

The thing that truly amazes me every time I see this film is that it was shot entirely in the studio. No exteriors -- the planes flying over at the end and the long shots after the sun has come out are stock shots. Everything with actors is on a set. This should have been nominated for the Art Direction Oscar.

I believe that Cinematographer, Paul Vogel, won an Oscar for his black and white work on Battleground.

I agree with your main point ... just wanted to mention that not everything was either in the studio or on a set. There are scenes at the beginning and at the end that were shot outdoors. I think the early outdoor scenes were shot on an actual army base.

I'm actually quite disappointed to learn that this was shot almost entirely in a studio.

I love rustic outdoors movies, especially those that film on location. While watching Battleground I was stunned by the "snowy woods" look. To learn that none of it was authentic is deflating.

So I guess I'm inadvertently complimenting the film's Art Direction, which simulated the forests of Belgium so realistically. I just wish that what I saw was genuine
