Was this remade as 'History of Violence?'

I know that "The History of Violence" was based on a graphic novel, but with the similarity of titles and set-up (family man has a deep, dark secret to reveal to his wife when a crazed stranger comes to town) has it ever been acknowledged that the comic was based on THIS film? It seems a remarkable coincidence if not.

This is a GREAT movie, by the way. And Janet Leigh has never looked hotter!

I was just going to post that I thought so, and there was your post. Sure seems as if History of Violence was built on the same material.

Always fun to see that someone else is watching at the same time.

This movie, I think, came first. If you like this one, see a more sinister Robert Ryan in "Crossfire" (around the same year).

Agreed. Thanks for the heads up.

No resemblance at all between the two that I can see. Secret human lives are a not uncommon scenario.

Both concern a man’s duality and both ask the audience to forgive a seemingly redeemed man for crimes in his past.

This same story has been told countless times over and over throughout history (beginning with Beowulf).

Massimo Girotti thought this was a decent version of the hit Italian novella "Ponce DeLeon Got It".

Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.

A person having a dark, seemingly forgotten secret from the past coming back to haunt them is a pretty common noir trope.

Man moves to small town where he becomes beloved pillar of the community. Coincidence means former colleague recognises him and we start to wonder if he's as cleancut as we thought. Due to a terrible act he commited in the past the former colleague seeks vengeance, for most of the film the details are left vague and fudged enough so the audience is unsure just how bad the guy is.

Close enough to be an inspiration in my opinion. Obviously there are elements in common with other noirs but I'm not aware of any with the same plot.

The commentary on my DVD copy said the story cane from an unpublished piece.
