Henry didn't enjoy the good life....

so he thought it would be fun to be a criminal?
He needed some excitement in his life?

So was the plan to have the chemist "water down" the drugs, leaving out the costly ingredients? then sell the valuable drugs on the black market?

Henry was sick of being Mr. Leona Cotterell. Her father treated him like dirt and Leona's maid was insolent to him. No wonder he wanted them to move into a home of their own. He also wanted money of his own and a real job instead of being an errand boy for Mr. Cotterell. Notice that in one scene early in their marriage, Leona puts cash into his wallet.

In the novella written from the movie and play scripts, Henry had criminal tendencies early on. His first job as a teenager was working in a local drugstore. He began stealing items that he could hock. The druggist caught him but Henry persuaded him not to press charges. As he explained to Mr. Evans, that was when he first learned not to get caught. This was not shown in the movie.

Henry did not sell the drugs himself but passed them onto Morano, who then sold them.
