I believe this film is a big influence on "Shutter Island". The story is not the same, but so much of the tone and feel of Shutter comes from the Pit. Having said that, All I can say is both films are a fun time. Gloriously insane!

I don't think this film inspired Denis LeHane to write the fine novel Shutter Island..But it is similar in that so little was known about mental illness then. I think LeHane wrote the novel as a horror cop story.
