Does Cherry die?

I second smurfthumper's question! Opinions? Script-readings? Info from the original story? I can't believe Matt would be so happy about reconciling with Dunston at the expense of Cherry's life.

reply

Cherry didn't die, he just got shot and fell over. It takes a lot more than that to kill somebody.

"No, I am your father."

reply

He appeared to me to be actually sitting up and receiving help.
I didn't think he was dead or dying.

You gotta take in the bullets ====He was shot with either a 45LC or q 44-40 remington, they were probably black lowder(Evidenced by the smoke and timeline)

These are BIG bullets BUT made of lead They expand quickly and cause a major flesh wound or hardly at all and pass through. there are stories of guys being shot 10-12 times and living. but it will knock you around.

I think Cherry took a good hit but was drinking with the boys 3 days later

I'd rather go hunting with Dick Cheney, than driving with Ted Kennedy

If you watch the following scene when Dunsten is challenging then shooting at Matt. Far in the background Cherry is still visible and is moving about possibly even sitting up.

reply

I hopefully agree that Cherry survived the shooting. Not because he was such a "good" guy, but because his character was well-developed, and he had become a pretty loyal Matt Garth supporter. He did seem to be trying to sit up at the end,

reply

It doesn't matter if someone wounded is able to sit up. If he was bleeding internally or infecting vital organs, Cherry was in big trouble**.

I heard an ER doc say recently that a gunshot wound to the ab' from point plank range results in death 33% of the time (jack ruby, for example) even with immediate hospitalization.
** That said I hope Cherry lived!

I don't think we can take into account real facts/data. Plenty of people got shot in the movie once and died immediately (for example that Mexican guy from Don whatever) :-)

The only answer to that question (whose "inclarity" is something that deduces from the movie's quality IMHO. there was no real reason/emotion to kill him and then to have the other two putting the end to the fight that way) is whether we see him moving in the background or not. I did see some commotion, but I am not certain whether he was moving or not...

If you watch it when Dunson fires at Cherry, you'll notice that for one reason or another he shoots low - very low...It looks like he's aiming at his foot! Cherry goes down and the the townsfolk rush to his aid and he's definitely conscious. He's not holding any part of his body but looks like he's in pain. It's Dunson that looks like he got hit harder - even though he (In typical Wayne form) sluffs it off as nothing.
When Dunson and Matt "duke it out", you can see a crowd of people attending to Cherry in the BG.....Guess we'll just have to wait for the sequel......*snickers*
