Basis of character Gaye Dawn--Gay Orlova--question

I was looking up the movies Bogart and Robinson made together when I noticed this tidbit listed in some trivia about "Key Largo":

"Claire Trevor's character, Gaye Dawn, was based on Lucky Luciano's mistress, Gay Orlova, who was allegedly executed by a German firing squad."

What the @#$%?

I've googled Orlova's name, other websites about the movie, wikipedia articles about Lucky Luciano to find out more, but I'm coming up empty. There is a book about Luciano's women, but I'm reluctant to buy it on the off chance it will have some information about one showgirl that he dated.

I would have thought there would have been some on-line explanation of such a tantalizing bit of info, but I can find nothing. A gangster's showgirl moll shot by Nazis. I smell a movie in the making.

Has anyone else heard anything at all about this? In a way, it's just as interesting as the movie itself, and would be so intriguing if it was true.

I had the same idea. Sounds like the kind of story they would have already made a movie about. It was pretty tough to find anything on Google. After poking around, I found two interesting photos with captions:

and article says she was almost executed by the French after
deportation in 1937:

This bit on a racy performance

and finally, this one says she was released by the French, then the
Germans, and lived after that in Paris
