I need some help.

Hello, everybody. I am a Japanese scholar who writes about American films and am writing about this film now but have a thing I would like to make sure of.

In the film, Bogart quotes like below:

"But we arn't making all this sacrifice of human efforts and human lives to return to the kind of a world we had after the last world war." (if I quote correctly)

Is this from one of FDR's speechs (perhaps during the Second World War)?

If so, does anybody know which one of his?

I appriciate any suggestions.

It's Roosevelt, all right, from his State of the Union address on January 6, 1942:

"[W]e of the United Nations are not making all this sacrifice of human effort and human lives to return to the kind of world we had after the last world war.

"We are fighting today for security, for progress, and for peace, not only for ourselves but for all men, not only for one generation but for all generations. We are fighting to cleanse the world of ancient evils, ancient ills."

Here's a link to the full text of the speech: www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=16253.

Thnak you very much, TopFrog.

I was almost giving up finding the source of this speech.

I am interpreting Key Largo from the political perspective and I think this speech is very important in that it clalifies Mcloud's political position in oppsition to Rocco who, I think, symbolizes the oppressive nature of Red Purge.

With your help, now I can go ahead.

Thanks again.
