Johnnie Rocco

I think Eddie G's entrance into the picture is terrific.

The camera frames in on a person in the bathtub obscured by the newspaper. There's a fan blowing across the tub and cigar smoke billowing over the top of the paper. As the camera moves in, the paper comes down and there is Eddie G in the tub, scowling with the cigar clamped in his mouth.

What an entrance! Only he could look regal and menacing sitting in the bathtub reading the paper.

And nobody spouts Warner Bros dialog ...that lingo better than he does.
"I thought you were a wiseguy from way back!"
"When Johnnie talked people listened...what Johnnie said went!"
"You'd give your right arm to nail me wouldn't you...get your name in all the papers...well listen, hick!"
"What's the matter sister...you look like you lost your best friend."
"They let me get deported like I was some dirty red or something."

The reason I enjoy this picure is because Bogie and Eddie G. are at the top of their game. Their concentration is amazing and you can feel it through the screen. And underneath the characters, you can also see two great actors who came up through the Warners salt mines...they've really "been there."

I've seen this movie at least a dozen times and every time I see it it's as good as the first. The way the tension builds, the snappy dialogue, the atmosphere, & every character has a memorable scene. It moves fast, no time is wasted and it's over before you know it- yet the way the tension builds is really brilliant. And Edward G's entrance is probably the best scene in the film. Superb direction. This may be my favorite film along with "Once Upon a Time in The West"

It isn't mentioned very much, but Lionel Barrymore was wonderful in 'Key Largo'. The entire cast was terrific, in fact.

Upon watching this film recently on DVD, it struck me that it would make a terrific stage play--it would need a fair amount of rewriting to make it work for the stage, but the set pieces and dialogue would be wonderful in the theater.

I got the DVD recently (replacing my vhs copy) and re-watched it. That shot always stands out as excellent. It's so well choreographed and set up. Very few directors can be bothered filming like that anymore, as they're too busy jumping the camera around all the time.

As Tramky said, everyone was great in Key Largo. Excellent casting, the whole way through, and of course you just can't beat Robinson as Rocco! :-D

One of my favorite pieces of dialogue from Key Largo, with each of the Big Three being, well, so much themselves!

Barrymore: What do you want Rocco?
Robinson: Well, I want..I want...
Bogart: He wants more.
Robinson: Yeah, that's it! I want more!

(Second childhood? No, this is still the first one.)

Re: Stage Play

The movie is based upon a Maxwell Anderson stage play. Of course it would make a great stage play, it was originally a stage play.

That's because it WAS a stage play before it was a film.
