Claire Trevor/Gaye Dawn Singing A Cappella

While Rocco forced Gaye to sing for her drink, Trevor once said (during a TCM mini-filler between films) that director John Huston pulled the same thing on her, in effect, giving her about ten minutes notice before shooting the scene, which was "originally scheduled" for the next day. While she admitted it was a bit sadistic of him (he had that reputation) to do that, it got the result required...that of a frightened woman singing for her supper, so to speak.

interesting scene - you really don't experience that kind of a suspense in movies alot

Classic scene. Especially when he then refuses to give her the drink: "But you were rotten."

she was a great actress.. she was even better in The High & The Mighty.

Amazing acting in that scene, I was very impressed by her.

Eddie Mueller screened this on TCM's Noir Alley the other night. He stated that Huston told Claire Trevor her voice would be dubbed in, so she sang it without stressing too much. Don't know which to believe, but they're both good stories!

Gaye Dawn was the victim of a sadist in the story so it was an inspired trick that John Houston pulled on Claire Trevor. I feel so sorry for her in that scene.
