I'm talking about when Bogey gets slapped.
The lady says "thank you", EGR smacks him, and Bogey says "you're welcome" to her without missing a beat.
THAT was wonderful. *thumbs up*

Right, and it was a way to emphasize how he felt Rocco was wrong to refuse her a drink after he'd promised it if she would sing the song--which she did.
"I can understand it, but I don't like it none!"--Cheyenne.
It was also Frank's way of showing how little he thought of Rocco. Gaye's tremulous "Thank you" got a response, while Rocco striking him across the face didn't even rate a reaction.

Survival! If had reacted he would have been killed
shareWell, yes, if he had done something about the slap he would have been shot. But if he had been thinking only of survival he wouldn't have given her the drink.
So much of this film is a careful contrast between Rocco's manic bravado and Frank's genuine courage. With Hollywood romanticizing gangsters so much before and since, that dynamic makes this film rare and very, very refreshing.
Agreed. This scene and the scene where Edward G. Robinson first shows up on screen are my two favorite scenes in the movie.
