The Jewish characters use Yiddish in ways that are more familiar from US New York set movies of this (and earlier) eras. E.g. 'Schlemiel' to describe a chap whose a bit of a loser.
Later at the boxing match, Lou Hyams refers to women as 'Polonies' which I know from Gay slang of the 50s and 60s (Polari) clearly a broader based etymology!
