The prophesying old man

Does anyone know or wonder who that old man relating the story is? I suspect he's the future Harold Dunlap but could it really be?

I think it also explains even more why he does not need a watch.

Or why he doesn't tell anybody what's at the back of the train.

Wow, what an ending! ... And to the OP: Perhaps that was the writers' intent; I would buy that theory...

I just took him to be a figure of fate. Like Dr Terror, on a train journey, with his tarot cards who was played by Peter Cushing in a later film. But unlike Dr Terror, the prophesying old man in this movie does give people a chance to escape their fate by giving them a warning.
