Travel to Arizona before the railroads arrived in the 1880s typically came via Panama then by river boat up the Colorado. That explains the Mule Creek and Hassayampa itinerary for the stage coach. It's stated Fort Apache is 30 miles south of Hassayampa which puts it 150 miles south and west of the White Mountains.

Actual events? Funny stuff!

Fort Apache was a real fort and is now owned by the White Mountain Apache Tribe. it was usually traveled to from the south, not the north as in the movie. Fort Grant was to the south of Fort Apache, but the movie implies it was to the north of Fort Apache. Don't rely on the movie geography.
