Charles Laughton talks of killing the woman with same level of concern of someone who just lost a five dollar bill. And inappropriate acting choice or is he supposed to be THAT aloof? I mean, even psychopaths in most movies react at least a little more.

He beaned her on the head as hard as he could with a heavy, metal, angular object. Hardly accidental.

And when he told Hagen about it afterward, he was clearly in shock over what he'd done and the implications it had for his future.
