had some solid humorous moments

i found genuine humor in several places in this film. milland's cynicism, for one.

but my two favorite characters were the antiques dealer and 'president mckinley'

that antiques dealer guy nailed his role, and brought a lot extra stuff to it. his expressions every time he turned around and saw milland passing by was hilarious. kinda reminded me of the doctor who fainted in front of gerard butler in dracula 2000

and the actor guy was so funny. i think it was his DEVIL MAY CARE audacity, throwing caution to the wind to have a fun moment and help his buddy out of a jam. that junk cracked me up. and all that was before the artiste screamed his name at the end lol

one more thing; it didn't hurt that both of these guys were portly fellows lol

That actor appears in many films of the day, and he grnerally plays the same character. He lent some lightness to an otherwise gloomy noir film. An excellent film noir too.

Elsa Lanchester, Charles Laughton's real wife, was hysterical as the dizzy artist who painted an impression of Ray Milland.

Elsa was the BEST thing about this movie besides of course, Laughton and Milland.

an all around superb film with an outstanding supporting cast.

the director/writer did not short change anyones part in the wonderful film.

in today's cinema, you don't see this kind of character nuance or attention to detail and indeed makes the story more profound in the telling.

I'm way late on this, but I felt compelled to comment after watching this today. From her introduction in the movie to her last line, she's splendid. "Didn't you review my (art) show in '41?" "I believe I did" "Oh, come in Mr.Klausmann." "That's Klausmeyer." "I've been planning to kill you for years." I had to rewind this exchange a couple of times, hilarious. Elsa was a treasure.

the movie certainly had a dark comedic tone to it

so many movies, so little time
