Bothered me, too. It was so far off! Hawaii ui the Rodney Dangerfield of US states. We never get any respect.

Back then a lot of people said "Los Angle-us", too. As far as Hawaii is concerned, now we're supposed to say "Hawai-i" or some such linguistically correct awkwardness.
