I'm amazed at how few votes there are for this superb film. Most of the great John Ford stock company - fine work from John Wayne, Pedro Armendariz, Mildred Natwick, Ward Bond, and Harry Carey, Jr. Moving story - sentimental but not sappy - with the right heroics and authentic redemption (the basis for every great film in my opinion).

Just watched this on the telly, must confess that I'd never heard of it before. Actually a great performance from John Wayne as the central character, especially when he was stumbling through the desert on his own.

shareThis is not only a good story with good acting but pone of the most beautiful color pictures ever. People are slow to give credit to a John Wayne movie when it is due. He is not high brow.

I really liked the movie. I also loved the original 1936 version with Walter Brennan and it's tough to say which is better. John Ford did it his own way and it turned out so good. Pretty emotional when John Wayne was walking through the desert by himself.

Actually, the 1936 version was itself a remake. The original movie was made in 1916, starring Harry Carey Senior, father of John Wayne's later costar. Harry Carey died in 1947 and John Ford made [and dedicated] his film as a tribute to the great man. It's a rare example of an original and two remakes all being good films in their own right.

Kind of defines what it means to be a man; at least the type of man we should all want to be.
This ties into the theme of redemption. All three men who are indicated as villians when Three Godfathers begins show their genuine good side once the Baby becomes their focus. The genuineness they show for the Baby's welfare is their redemption.

I believe the 1936 is the better movie. I don't believe that John Wayne would have played the lead as dark. And the ending was one that people would not have put up with for "the Duke"
