The recording equipment?
Anybody know anything about the recording equipment that Claude Rains uses? Like what is it called, who made it, what model etc?

I think it was manufactured by RCAVictor, but since it is only on tape, a freeze-frame isn't clear enough to tell for sure. Anyone one else?

shareIt is obvious that it records the old style vinyl records...Except they are so brittle when people break them in the film. Also, Claude Rains tosses one on a fire. I think even a man with servants would hesitate to do this -- wouldn't vinyl make a bad-smelling melted mess in the fireplace?
I think it's more likely that these are shellac discs (see Wikipedia's description http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinyl_record#Limitations) or even acetate discs, both of which were made with a cellulose resin. Either kind could have shattered satisfyingly onscreen because acetate recordings in the WWII era were on glass backing -- the usual backing material for acetate discs (aluminum) was rationed at the time.

You'll notice that the discs look larger than standard LP records ... I'm pretty sure they're 16" transcription discs ... the instantaneous variety.
