He was a first choice for the film. If he had starred, he would have probably slugged Jane Greer in the car and then ended up with the girl afterward (who would have been played by Lauren Bacall).

I don't think either that he would have been in a fedora and trenchcoat by a river, saved by a sidekick with a fishing rod.

He probably would not have done that, but he would have smoked even more cigarettes! And Lauren Bacall would have sung a song at the bar in Mexico where you can close your eyes and drink bourbon.
