In my opinion Vincent Price's acting here strikes the wrong chord and weakens the movie. His character comes off as refined, but a manufactured, artificial and "precious" refinement.

That's exactly how the character was supposed to come off. Max is a phony. His accent, his flowery speech, his grand and sophisticated manner, his tales of all the romantic places he's visited--all BS. He's a total poser. Price was perfectly, delightfully slimy in the role.
I am a Vincent Price fan, mainly through his horror films, and I thought that he was excellent in this. He stole the show.
I finally watched this movie on Amazon Prime last night and I think this movie is a hidden gem.
