Great cast... remake of 1923 film... Spoilers **

LOVE the cast of this one. i wonder if the 1923 film version and the book ended the same way. (the original starred Percy Marmont, who was used extensively by Hitchcock. Marmont died in 1977... would be interesting to hear his take on the remake.) such adult subject matter for 1947, but maybe it was more acceptable when presented by mostly Canadian and British actors, and the fact that Sabre's life is turned upside down as a result of his philandering; kind of a postman rings twice ending... justice will catch up with you sooner or later.

near the beginning, Mabel says "I'd fight for my man." but then she doesn't... SHE was the one who told Marc to go experiment, but i guess the gossip by the townies got to be too much.

His stodgy performance hurts this film a lot. Robert Donat would have made more of it,had he done it. He was often sick, and balked at coming to America to do it. MGM diluted the material some also. Effie kills herself AND her baby in the novel. Too bad the old silent is lost. All that remains of it is sheet music and a song.
