Underated

I think this film should be more highly regarded because it gives some historical perspective to contemporary society. People tend to look back at the past in an idealistic way. This film shows many aspect of society haven't really changed that much. It was just as hard then to be a descent person and still succeed as it is today.

Also, I think Gable gives a wonderfully thoughtful and mature performance which I think reflects his WW II experience. This is his real return to the screen, not the hypes "Gable's back and Garson's got him" in 1945.

I love this movie, but it's sad that 62 years later, advertising is still largely irritate, irritate, irritate!

reply

Irritation is memorable. That's what grabs and holds.

Life's like that, isn't it: undercooked, half-baked or just plain insipient.

underrated indeed

The Hucksters was great to watch. Mocking the advertising industry in a delightful comic manner whilst adding drama with the love triangle centered around Victor's actions. The acting gave The Hucksters an added touch, the variety of performances created a scenario which was pleasing as a viewer.

"I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not".

Very underrated. Not well known. Not shown often. Actually, this is the first time I came across this gem. Loved it, loved Clark Gable, loved Deborah Kerr.

Clark was just adorable when he was talking to the women he was attracted to. The twinkle in his eye and kiss on his lips as he spoke on the phone to the previous night's paramour in his first scene was priceless. I fell in love with him AGAIN! I never realized the vastness of his facial expressions before. He looked serious and business-like when he was dealing with his advertising cronies and looked charming, fun loving and caring when he was "off he clock".

There was no one more elegant, classy and sexy as Deborah Kerr. Nominated for 6 Best Actress in a Leading Role Academy Awards but never winning, remarkable.

Ava Gardner always a sultry beauty, her quick, sharp dialogue showed the high level of good script writing.

The film showed the falseness, conniving and corrupt side of advertising vs. personal integrity, ethical behavior and morality. Good life lesson film of the time rings true today, for me at least.

This has become a NEW favorite.

Agreed.

Plus it has a lot of good performances in it. The current IMDb rating is 6.7, but I gave it an 8.
