A 26/27 year-old Gene doing this kind of role.

First of all, Gene Tierney was great in this role - a bereaved mother living in a haunted house, bonding with the ghost at the turn of the 20th century. It made for a great fantasy film, but could you see a 26 (or 27) year-old actress doing a role like this today? I don't think so. Today's young actresses don't have the depth to take on such a role, while women of Gene's generation had to mature early and take on more demanding roles. It says a lot about her performance. Same with her performance in "Leave Her to Heaven".

You are so right! Just for the heck of it, I looked up famous 27 year old actresses, and the only two I recognized were Keira Knightley and Kaely Cucco.

I can't picture either of them in the part! As for Daniel Gregg.... sigh. Nobody beats Rex Harrison in the movie or Edward Mulhare (tv show).

How sad, that you were not born in my time, nor I, in yours.

Gene Tierney was a beautiful, magnificent actress. So strong and beautiful that she inspired the creation of a famous doll, also named " Gene", by Mel Odom.

However, I would like to point out that Demi Moore was not exactly middle- aged when she played opposite a ghost in the movie, " Ghost", which I also love for its unusual use of insight into the realm beyond this life.

And one of my favorite modern movies, as opposed to a true classic film like " Mrs. Muir", is also about the mysteries of love across time and space, " Somewhere In Time".
Most women seem to " get it"- most men seem not to..
Two great actors gone too soon, I just realized- Patrick Swayze and Christopher Reeve.
OK, crying again. ( I stopped my Netflix streaming movie to look up a character and was drawn to the message board.) :)

I have a Gene doll. She's dressed in a replica of the white dress Gene Tierney wore in one scene in the movie.

I could totally see Keira doing it

I completely agree. She was very young in this movie.

Today there are very few actors or actresses of that age who have the appearance, voice, or demeanor of a grownup, as Tierney did. They seem like high school kids until they're in their forties.

Agree: an exceptional performance, especially so considering her age. With no disrespect to Laura or Leave Her to Heaven, I'd rate Ghost & Mrs. Muir by far her best performance.
