Most movies have different directors...She left MGM where she was under contract for 7 years, so she can appear in movies that did not depend on her looking glamourous, with sheek diamonds and the ilk. She produced it with her own money and the help of Edgar Ulmer, a friend from europe who has made a name for himself in the "B" movie genre in the 40's. ..."Detour" was one of his better ones. and TCM shows it at times. Hedy may have seen 'wooden' as the glamourous Queen she was, cause it did not need any Histronics. Don't know how many movies you have seen her in, but she wasn't wooden in Lady of the Tropics, Tortilla Flat, H.m Pulham, esq, and Experiment Perilous..to name some of her unwooden performances. She also was excellent as "Delilah"...the others were roles given to her and because of her contract, her boss, Mr. Mayer refused to loan her out to warners for Casablanca and Laura. Although those roles weren't anything to write home about for the women in them, they happened to turn out to be successful because of the storyline... You get a good or excellent script and all concerned are better for it.
