Surprised at the ending (Spoilers)

When Kate was walking along the cliff in the fog near the end of the film, a man is seen approaching her. I thought certain that that man was Karnock and that they would be the "happy-ending" couple.

Am I the only one who thought about that ending?

That didn't occur to me at the time. But now that you mention it, that would have been a much better ending!

Not really. Karnock liked Kate, but she was not attracted to him at all.
Kate loved Bill, Bill kinda loved-then-liked Kate. The only logical ending is the one we got.

It would have been an even better ending if it had been Karnock, and he had fallen off the cliff.
